Victorian 18K Gypsy-Set Ruby and Diamond Ring

Antique
Sale price$1,800.00

Victorian jewelers perfected the gypsy setting—also called star setting—where stones sit flush with the metal's outer surface, protected in hand-carved seats with burnished edges that catch light like halos. This particular example from the 1890s demonstrates the technique with two rubies and a diamond pressed deep into 18K rose gold, each one surrounded by the distinctive star-shaped rim that gave the setting its name. The stones protrude through to the band's interior—whether from original deep carving, thinning from wear, or a later repair is unclear. The two rubies display the color variance common in Victorian jewelry—one leaning pink, the other toward purple—suggesting they were matched by eye rather than modern grading standards. At 3.13 grams with a 4mm band width, it has the substantial feel Victorian jewelers insisted upon. The interior inscription has nearly vanished after 130 years of wear, leaving only ghostly traces. Wear it alone on your right hand like a signet, or stack it with your other favorites—Victorian rings were made for women who wore all their jewelry at once, every day, because leaving it in the safe seemed a waste.

Wear it to breakfast.

Condition Notes

Shows 130 years of continuous wear. The gypsy settings remain intact with burnished edges softened but secure. Important: The stones protrude through to the interior of the band and can be felt when worn—whether from original deep carving, thinning from wear, or a later repair is unclear. The two rubies show natural color variation (one pink-toned, one purple-toned). Interior inscription nearly completely worn away—only faint traces remain visible. Band maintains warm rose gold color. No damage to stones themselves, no other repairs visible, no alterations detected. Minor surface marks consistent with age and use. Settings show slight irregularities of hand-carving. The protruding stones do not affect wearability but should be noted for comfort expectations.
